The Definitive Edition maintains the designs from The Conquerors, but adknowledges the mistake by giving faded painted colors to Mesoamerican Fortified Towers and Aztec and Mayan Wonders. Some buildings are unconstructable, and are only found in the Scenario Editor or provided beforehand in a scenario, and cannot be built by the player in any regular game.Constructable buildings are buildings that can be built in regular games by Villagers.
Some values (usually HP and armor) increase upon Age advancement for certain buildings and thus are lower in earlier Ages. The values for earlier Ages are visible in the table as mouseovers. Fortifications are built 33 faster (removed in the Definitive Edition ). Ever since, every single of the four expansions introduced at least one new set, and with the release of the Definitive Edition, there are eleven different architecture sets for 35 civilizations. The Castle Age architecture is based on the Sudano-Sahelian architecture, with elements of Aksumite architecture in the Imperial Age. The timber architecture in the Feudal Age is based on Veliky Novgorod and the Russian Wooden elements. The Imperial Age buildings are based on 16th-17th century Muscovite architecture. Upon its introduction in The Forgotten, the Mediterranean architecture set was unique to the Italians. Prior to the Definitive Edition, the Byzantines used the Middle Eastern architecture set, while the Spanish used the Western European architecture set. The Middle Eastern Castle most resembles the Crusader castle Krak des Chevaliers in Syria. Its merlons, however, are of typical Moorish style and resemble the ones on the Almoravid Koubba. In The Forgotten and The African Kingdoms, the Indians also used the Middle Eastern architecture set. With the introduction of Rise of the Rajas, they now use the South Asian set. The Byzantines were moved to the Mediterranean architecture set in the Definitive Edition. In The Forgotten, the Mediterranean set had that feature but lost it in The African Kingdoms. The Castle Age and Imperial Age buildings are based on medieval Khmer architecture. The Vietnamese were moved to the more historically accurate East Asian architecture set in the Definitive Edition. The Spanish were moved to the Mediterranean architecture set in the Definitive Edition. In the Definitive Edition, the background of the other icons (except for Krepost, Fish Trap and Farm) was changed to various parts of Windows XPs default background image, Bliss. Since the Spanish were changed to the Mediterranean building set in the Definitive Edition, the Western European Bombard Tower can now only be seen in all tech mode or campaigns. If given either in the Scenario Editor, they would have the Central European style and cause the game to crash upon launch, or be unable to train any units even while on all tech mode, respectively.
